Weather Holds

Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate with us when it comes to shipping wine. Wine is sensitive to temperature extremes. We want to make sure that your order isn’t damaged on the way to you due to heat or cold.

For each shipment, we review the route your order will take from us to you. If we find that the conditions could damage your wine, we will place the order on hold until the conditions change for the better.

What can you do about it?

If you need your order urgently, we recommend that you upgrade to 2-Day Air Shipping. This reduces the amount of time that your order spends in the bad weather. You can select this option when checking out and we won’t place the order on hold.

If you would like us to ship your order despite the heat/cold, using Ground service, we can. Please leave us a Note on your order stating that you’d like to ship despite the weather advisory. Please keep in mind that we can’t guarantee that your order will arrive in optimum condition. We are not able to refund orders that are shipped despite our weather hold.

If you don’t use one of the above options, we’ll email you to notify of expected shipping date and delivery date.

What are the conditions for a weather hold?

Cold: If we think that the temperature will dip below 32°F along the route to the destination, we will place the order on hold. This means that many shipments outside of the West Coast are held from November to February/March. Orders that are subjected to extreme cold may create tartrate crystals or even freeze (alcohol can freeze when it gets to around 20°F).

Heat: If we think that the temperature will reach above 90°F along the route to the destination, we will place the order on hold. This means many shipments outside of the West Coast are held from June to September/October, but there may be occasional opportunities to ship out. Orders that are subjected to extreme heat may develop haze, speed up aging (this is bad) and the pressure in the bottle may push the cork out and cause leaking.

We hope that this page gives you the information you need regarding your order. Please let us know if we can answer any additional questions by sending us an email at [email protected]
